Synopsis: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas tells the story of Bruno, a young German boy growing up during World War II. As a nine-year-old, Bruno lived in his own world of imagination. He enjoyed reading adventure stories and going on expeditions to explore the lesser-known corners of his family’s massive house in Berlin. His life is changed when his family moves at a small house in the middle of nowhere and he is about to face what he says is Out-With.
My review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Aesthetic
The title is simple but rather complex in its unique way. It reflects to us, the readers, the juvenile simplicity of something so gore and morbid as the Holocaust and its atrocities.
When I`ve first found the book, I was intrigued by its childish-like sound, and oh boy how wrong I was once I opened it and started to read it from cover to cover.
The cover is–unfortunately–adapted by the movie and so, have
not seen the original cover, which is a boomer. Still, it gives you a harsh feeling about reality.
The story itself, it is an emotional roller-coaster that makes you to see the world through the eyes of a child whom is not fully aware of the events around him. As you move from page to page, you smile, you laugh, and can also look nostalgically at Bruno, but when it hits you, it hits like a train.
A train that is on fire, flying around with 500m/h directly into your heart. Highly recommend for the detailed style of writing from the author. Believe me, this is the first Historical Fiction book I have ever read and it is really good.
Emotional Damage: On a scale from 1 to 10//9//
