Fight the summer heat. Tips&Tricks.

Summer grows hotter every day and we feel like boiling in the pits of hell. To stay cool, we hydrate, eat lots of fruits and vegetables and ice cream. We try to avoid staying in the sun for long periods of time and wear light clothes. Still, there is another problem we have to take care of; how do we keep our houses cool in the summer?

Here is a list of tips to keep your house cool in the summer.

Close the blinds

This is one of the most efficient way to keep your house out of the summer heat. Close all the blinds in the house, especially those in the north and west, where the sun shines the brightest. Besides doing that, if you have the possibility, invest in some block-out curtains, which will reflect the heat outside. Also, I have seen on tiktok that you can also buy cheap mirror windows for your house, to keep the heat out.

Open windows at night

After you kept the windows shut and the blinds closed all day, as the night is here and the air is cooler, it is time for you to open them wide, to let the cooler air to find its way into your home and help you sleep.

Keep your doors open

Leave your interior doors open, particularly if you lack an open-concept living space. This simple step is critical to keeping your home cool. Open doors allow air to circulate freely, eliminating hot spots and regulating the temperature within your home.

Change your bedsheets more often

This tip might seem unimportant, but it makes a world of difference to your home’s temperature. Pick lighter fabrics, preferably in brighter colors such as white, since they reflect light and heat and help keep your house cool in the summer. The material of your sheets also matters because lightweight fabrics breathe easier than thicker ones. Since changing your sheets now and then is a great way to freshen up your home, this is a valuable investment.

Avoid using the stove or oven

This tip might sound obvious, but I felt like we needed it in this list.

Cooking generates excess heat and can significantly raise the temperature inside your home. Also, nobody wants to stand in the hottest part of their home in this weather. Instead, opt for meals that don’t need cooking, such as salads or sandwiches. If you must cook, try doing it outdoors on the grill. Not only will this keep your home cool, but it also gives you an excellent excuse to get extra mileage out of your grill!

Get more plants in the house

This may seem like an excuse for your girlfriend to buy more plants, but it helps for sure. Besides making the house smell better, plants bring oxygen in the house and also shade, which helps fighting the heatwave.

Install cooling curtains.

First, spritz your curtains, or any sheet, with cold water and hang it over your curtains. Then, as the breeze flows into your home, it blows through the water, evaporating it and, in turn, cooling your house down. You could also dip the hem of your curtains in a bucket of water.  That way, you won’t have to keep spritzing the curtains with water over and over again.
